Peyton Place in Springfield Va., is as an unassuming restaurant as it gets, blink and you miss it, you have to squint to see it. It's stuck in between a strip of stores 75 feet wide off of Backlick Rd., but I think it's got the best fried chicken I've tasted. They pressure cook their chicken, so the result is a light and thin skin and ultra crispy. This picture doesn't do it justice, when you get it, it looks as great as it tastes, very flavorful and very moist. I've eaten here many times and only once was the inside a bit dry, but I wasn't complaining.

Pictured is what they call a Snack Pack, a two piece meal, I added one wing to the order, but you get a choice of white or dark, and it comes with slaw, two giant potato wedges, two sour-dough rolls, sour cream for the wedges and butter. All this came to $7.36, pretty good deal, but I would of paid that just for the chicken. A very small fraternity of us know about the fried chicken at Peyton Place and want to keep it that way, it's already difficult to carry-out their popular chicken in the evening as it is.

They also have steaks, entrees and sandwiches too. Within the restaurant there is also an american saloon and a stage for live music. Note: when carrying out a large order, whichever box/container they use, it's best to release the hot air a few times to avoid moisture build up, it keeps the pressure cooked crispiness longer.

Those eyes, those ears, those nose! Aahhh roooo! It's time to get your dog on, for the one hundred and thirty third time! Can you believe it's been going on this long? That's alot of ticks! Even the ticks on these champions get a grooming. Last year's winner UNO, was the first beagle ever to claim Best In Show. That smacks of canine bigotry.

Who will be Best In Show this year? Will there be another great story?,.. a long shot defies the odds?,... It better not be some dumb yapper mutt!! I'm very sorry for that outburst, I don't know what got into me, I apologize. Anyway,.. watching the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show every year is like someone handing me a steaming bowl of homemade chicken soup. It's comfort! Crab cake at Faidley's Baltimore

This is the award winning lump crab cake from Faidleys Seafood in the historic Lexington Market in Baltimore. You can get a platter with fries and a side but got just the crab cake. They, and most everyone say it's the best in Baltimore, and that's saying alot because crab cakes are the claim to fame for a ton of restaurants in this city. The crab cakes here are basically a large ball of almost entirely lump crab meat, surrounded by a perfect blend of tangy and sweet filling. Don't let the look of it fool you, that thing is almost ALL lump meat! The best crab cake around? I couldn't say, I don't eat many crab cakes but these were awesome. The atmosphere is great, they serve cold beer, and the staff have a good time.

I ducked into the Main Ave. Fish Wharf in SE Washington DC today for a half dozen clams for the always cheap $5. Make sure you go to the far end of Jessie's Cooked Seafood stand, I find it's got the best. Everytime I go there, the clams are always bigger, colder, and tastier than the other stands. Tip the guys before they start shucking and they always take care of you.

This is the White Onion pizza at Vace Italian Delicatessen in Cleveland Park, Washington D.C., pronounced (vaa-chay). I could go on and on and tell you how much I like this pizza, but I won't. I'll just say It's my favorite pizza pie. All the others like The Italian Store, 2 Amy's, Pizzeria Paradiso and so on, have their own specialties and their great but this is by far my favorite. Very thin crust with the best tasting mozzarella, and plenty of shaved, sweet Vidalia onion. Their other pizzas are also made with fresh ingredients and are delish. Many people consider Vace the best kept secret in D.C. and I agree, their pizzas are the best.

There are alot of Peruvian chicken restaurants around the D.C. area, but the one place that keeps coming up in blogs and articles is El Pollo Rico in the Clarendon district in Arlington Va. It was recently featured on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations show. Around lunch or dinner time the activity in the parking lot of El Pollo Rico is reminiscent of the frantic drive-in restaurants of the fifties. People going in and out, doors opening and closing, cars jockeying or spots. Folks, everyone is saying this is hands down the best chicken of this type in the area.

Chicken is the only entree on the menu here, you can get a quarter, half or whole. They'll ask you "with everything?" and you'll get cole slaw and fries on the side along with as many tiny containers of (dangerous) green chilli and their delicious mustard/mayo sauce as you like. The chicken really is delicious and very moist. Great unusual spices flavor it, and the skin is cooked crispy so it's almost like another side dish. The slaw has heavy horseradish and the fries are from frozen but crispy. Yuca frita or plantains would be a better side but what are you gonna do. A fork-full of chicken, skin, chili, and mustard/mayo sauce and you know why the lines are always long. Wash it all down with cold Inca Kola. So is it the best Peruvian chicken I've ever had? Yes.

The dining room is huge, it's cash only, and typical of a Clarendon eatery, the parking is sparse. It's all worth it though, it's the very well seasoned, very moist chicken that people show up in droves for. Also a bargain, my half chicken meal pictured above, with everything and the Kola came to $9.57.

What everybody says about Matchbox in the Penn Quarter district of Washington DC, is to try the Flat-Iron Steak Pizza and the Mini Burgers. I was in the mood for the minis, the pizza will be next time I guess. They come in quantities of 3, 6, or 9. The couple next to me ordered 9, and they looked funny and delicious, all of them sitting on that plate. I got the three and it's plenty! Little Angus beef patties with a pickle, and your choice of three cheeses on buttered brioche. Fantastic! The dill pickle adds the perfect acid, and the small portion of melted mozzarella was just enough. Top of the line Minis! The onion straws come with the meal and surprisingly they are not boring. They are delicate, crispy and sweet.

Check out the Drink List on their website, they boast award winning concoctions, along with having the reputation as one of the best martini bars in the area. Matchbox has a very hip, very cool interior, you feel like a hipster when your there, there are also different, neatly folded newspapers from around our region at every place setting at the bar - nice! And I thought the service was very friendly and laid back.

Julia's Empanadas

I finally made it down to one of the world famous Julia's Empanadas locations in Washington DC, it is a very well known establishment and all 3 stores are located there. An Empanada is a stuffed pastry, baked, and stuffed with various ingredients. Julia's has about 10 different kinds, the one the left is the Jamaican (ground and chopped beef, onion, potato, curry, and spices). And on the right is the Turkey w/ spring onion (cilantro, onion and jalapeno seasoned w/ tumeric). Both very good, I mean someone handing you an Empanada is like someone handing you a diamond, nothing bad can come from it, ever. I was hoping the crust was alittle more crispy and flaky but the filling more than makes up for it. It's cheap too, $3.50 apiece, and the cucumber, radish salad was fresh and only a $1.50. Julias is open till 4 am on the weekends.

Frozen custard at The Dairy Godmother

It's the Wisconsin-style vanilla frozen custard from the very popular The Dairy Godmother, located in the very quaint "Main Street" section of Mt. Vernon Ave. in Alexandria Va. I'm not huge into sweets and desserts and am the furthest thing away from a frozen custard expert but, here, it tastes like a sugar, cream, and milk fat heaven, trust me on this one.

Arepas at La Caraquena

This was my grilled Venezuelan cornmeal bread stuffed with Reina Pepeada (lightly seasoned avocado with baked chicken), It's a type of stuffed arepas. The cornmeal can come either fried or grilled, my guy on the inside said to get grilled, "...it always makes the cornmeal softer..."

It's from La Caraquena, a tiny Latin American restaurant in Falls Church, Va. They serve over 11 types of arepas there along with beef, chicken, and seafood entrees.

This is the most flavorful thing I've had in this area, and I'm not kidding, the avocado and chicken is subtly deeelish, but here the basic taste of the grains in the white cornmeal instantly took me back to a one woman run roadside bread meal I had in the middle of nowhere in the Baja Peninsula. The salsa (pictured) rocked out too, it's got a bite and it's hot. Also the arepas was grilled with a tasty light oil that remains at the bottom of it. This is my new and lasting favorite thing to eat in this town.

They are the best quality sausage shipped in from New York, sauteed green peppers and onion, wrapped in thin, hand rolled dough. They are Hippie Rolls from Joe's Place, Woodbridge Va. It's made fresh every morning and they come in spicy or mild sausage. Crispy outside, piping hot inside. It's common for loyal customers to travel 100 plus miles to get these, they buy a bunch and freeze them when they get home.

These rolls are the most delicious things. It's the mild, sweet, soft sausage that's different from almost anything sold in these parts. You will flip for these things.

Ray's Hell Burger

Your not going to find any french fries here, " ..no fries, ever.." says owner Michael Lundrum. They don't serve them, just corn, watermelon and a few light sides. Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington Va., is got the buzz as the best burger's in our entire area, at least for now. A very large 10oz. patty, cooked 1. "warm red center" 2. "pink" or 3. "cooked throughout" I had the pink, and it was still deliciously bloody. 3 months training is required for the cooks. The apprenticeship at Lundrums Ray's the Steaks a few doors down.

The burger I had was $6.95 plus $1 for the Smoked Mozzarella, two half ears of corn and a giant iced tea, all for $10 bucks. Great price! and they have more expensive, specialty burgers too. The choice of luxurious cheeses for the price is the kicker here, all on top of a home ground, perfectly cooked monster. The brioche bun is lacking, and it quickly disintegrates under the juicy steak, but who cares. Warning, the place is small and IT PACKS OUT, all day, every day.

Wacky Packages, The Book!

I just came across this Wacky Packages coffee table book! If you loved Wacky Pack stickers as much as I did, this book is definitely for us.

Wacky Packages (Abrams; June 2008; $19.95; 240 pages, 233 color illustrations), is the first-ever collection of Series One through Series Seven (from 1973 and 1974) and showcases images of all 223 rare and hard-to-find stickers. Celebrating Wacky Packages’ 35th anniversary, the book also includes a bonus pack of four rare and previously unreleased stickers, an introduction by Art Spiegelman (one of the original creators), and an afterword by Jay Lynch (a long-time Wacky Packages collaborator). hulu is a pretty good site to at the very least get your somewhat hard to find SNL clips including the commercial skits and the SNL Digital Shorts. It's all free, but ad supported streaming video of TV shows and movies from Fox, NBC and a bunch of other networks and studios. And Flash gives you a higher resolution and size than YouTube. It gives you over a 100 motion pictures to choose too,.. full length features, clips and trailers. It seems to be worth the exploring, just the SNL stuff alone was keeping me pretty happy.

My Margherita at Pupatella

Hand-rolled pizza pie from a food cart? Say what? It's the little red food cart that can. Pupatella on the corner of 9th and N. Stuart St, Ballston Common, Arlington Va., next to the Ballston Metro. I heard whispers of this place hanging out at the Kettler Iceplex around the corner. And you know when people whisper, it's gotta be good. Culinary school friends Anastasiya Laufenberg and Enzo Algarme are both slinging it, in Neopolitan style, and flavor, for cheap. Working with tiny 650 degree ovens, they peddle way above average street fare.

My Margherita was 6 bucks, thin, light, really fresh tasting mozzarella, and of course San-Marzano tomatoes. The Margherita is the easiest thing on the menu so I got it in about 8 min. Their bringing it to us, so check them out. Washingtonian Magazine also says they got the best sausage and grilled onion sandwich this side of Philadelphia! Will have to try next time.

Oyster Po' Boy at Bread Line

If your from D.C. and you haven't heard of Bread Line, it's like being from Orlando and not have heard of Mickey. Usually packed by White House staffers, they've been flat-out called the best sandwich makers in Washington D.C., oh, and their small industrial-like bread factory cranks out some pretty good bread too. Sandwiches like soft shell crab, the Cuban on Thursdays are the talk of the place, and from what I've read, EVERYONES favorite egg salad sandwich.

Today for me, the Oyster Po' Boy. Six huge pieces of fried oysters, very good, two were a little soggy,..I don't know what that means,..the other four or so, crispy. A very tasty, spicy remoulade, a little too heavy on the Bermuda onion. All sitting on a layer of seasoned, vinegar marinated cabbage. It was good they carved out the middle of the bun, or were looking at me falling out of my chair and collapsing, leaving me with food in my mouth and convulsing. This Po' Boy was tasty but seemed a little over complicated with flavors taking away from the prize, the oysters. I'm not daunted though, they're know for great sandwiches and am looking forward to trying them all.

Banh Mi at Song Que

My pork meatball Banh Mi sandwich at Song Que in Eden Center, Falls Church Va. There are plenty of shops in there selling these signature Vietnamese sandwiches, but everyone knows that "The Song" is the place for the best. And yes, it does beat out a very good sandwich at Banh Mi DC (3103-C Graham Rd., Falls Church). Here the baguette and the crisp veggies are fresh but are a standard. But the pork meatball filling was so delicate and sweet, along with the light, creamy pate dressing made it the best Banh Mi I've had,..really. The mouth was definitely happy here. Their wide variety of frozen Bubble Tea's are also very popular, did not see anyone there without one, I had the melon and it kicked ass.

The owner also told me I missed chef Anthony Bourdain by a couple of days, he and his No Reservations crew stopped in exclusively for sandwiches, and taped a segment that will feature the restaurant for an episode airing in about 3 months.

Just saw it, I thought Heath Ledgers Joker in The Dark Knight was more than I expected. His version of the Joker is the meanest, coolest, clearly the freshest comic book movie villain I've ever seen. Spike Mendelsohn cracked the top 5 on the brilliant Top Chef on Bravo. I've watched the last two seasons religiously, and happen to think it's the most purposeful show on all of television. So it was pretty cool to see him slinging the grub today at his Good Stuff Eatery. With local ties and with his family, he's opened a burger joint in Capitol Hill. He's also our newest Caps fan.

Their beef is organic, he uses Vermont cheddar, Ruby tomatoes, dairy fresh cheese, home-made ice cream and shakes, and salads are on the menu served with cornbread. With the new restaurant buzz, I waited 45 min. to order my burger, I was gonna get something light but I said screw it, I waited all this time I needed satisfaction, the "Spikes 5 Napkin" (Vermont cheddar, Applewood bacon, egg, on toasted Brioche), with onion rings, (pictured in the cup), with various dipping sauces that are available. The entire meal with drink, $13.

The burger was rich, lovin the egg, not as greasy as it looks in the pic, the patty was alittle undercooked, the seasoned bacon and cheese helped it along, with the light Brioche. The Vidalia onion rings,..more like petals, were crispy in parts and soggy and undone in others,..it means well but it needs work,...or the resaturant needs time to recover from the massive lines resulting in backed up orders in the kitchen. They have interesting specialty burgers on the menu, one with Daikon and carrots, will have to try another time,..like in two months when the lines are gone.

The place is clean, cool, trendy, distressed wood along with chrome features, the music is cranked, looking forward to going back when it's not so hurried for the customers and their crew.

James Beard Award winner Ann Cashion's Taqueria Nacionale in Capitol Hill. A strictly carry-out joint, tough to find, (sits next to her upscale Johnny's Half Shell). Here I tried two out of her four signature tacos, the beef carnita and the fish taco. Simple flavors and good! Very similar in prep and taste of all the roadside taco stands I've visited in southern California and Rosarita and Ensenada Mexico.

The beef taco, grilled steak, chopped onion, cilantro, done. The fish taco, Alaskan pollack, cabbage and a light creme salsa. I've read complaints about the "2 thick tortillas" it comes on but every authentic taco I've had out west have them this way. These tacos are alittle over 2 bucks apiece, not bad. I had two but three would of completely satisfied me. You can also take as many small containers of their 3 killer homemade salsa's as you like. Didn't try their horchata (a very common almondy milk drink) but I did have one of their aguas frescas drinks, I chose the watermelon over the sweet mango and orange. Open Monday through Friday for breakfast and lunch.

B&W: pictured clockwise • Carrot Cake - a super miniature version, a very, very fluffy semi-sweet icing, moist cake • Coconut - a very rich icing, light coconut flavor, super moist cake • Chocolate - great creamy milk chocolate icing, flavorful but crumbly cake

GC: • Key Lime - Best of the 6, perfect sweet to tart icing, fluffy cake • Red Velvet - icing is a sophisticated cream cheese/buttery flavor, a somewhat dry cake • Chocolate Ganache - a deep dark chocolate flavor, thin layer of ganache, semi-moist cake

I'm not really big on sweets but first I have to say all 6 of these cupcakes were OUT OF THIS WORLD. I was ready to like Baked & Wired because of so many positive reviews but I have to be honest and in my completely novice opinion, on this day I gotta go with Georgetown Cupcake. The Key Lime destroyed. Look at it, so smug.

Now I'm going to lunch." he barks out, turning over the reigns of his store to a wide-eyed staffer. Then a quick friendly wink at a customer and he's out the door in his lime green Bermuda shorts.

He is the elderly owner of Capitol Hill Books, near Eastern Market in Washington DC, a brownstone turned new and used book store. If you're not into a book store with very tight quarters or mounds and mounds of books that teeter and looks as if there about to fall on you, this isn't the place for you.

Every city would love and cherish a store like this, a maze of books stacked to the ceiling with corridors often two feet wide. The foreign language section is in the bathroom, autobiography's fill a closet and spill out into the hall. There are bare bulbs to chandeliers to light the way, and classical music is piped in from every corner of the place. They sell novels to encyclopedias to trade publications to first editions and rare books. Every nook and cranny of the property has stacks of books, often eliciting snickers from customers because of it's fantastically organized clutter. Worth a visit. And they have free wine and cheese on the second Saturday of the month starting at 4pm.

Mandu (Korean for dumpling) is a Korean restaurant on 18th St. NW D.C. This is my second visit, and again it does a great job. Located in the trendy district of Dupont Circle, and just south of Adams Morgan. The streets are pretty busy, theres always a hungry crowd here and I heard they can pack it in for dinner. Long-time Virginia native & owner-chef Yesoon Lee and her son seeks to introduce casual/upscale Korean fare to downtown.
I've tried the Bi-Bim-Bap, a traditional Korean dish that incorporates fresh vegetables with rice. Here it's a winner. This dish can always be used to gage the freshness of a multitude of the restaurants ingredients, because it contains just that. This time around I ducked in for a quick beer and some apps. I had the pork and beef Mandu $5, and the DooBu (pan-seared tofu with egg) $4. (my meal today pictured above for 9 bucks.) I have to tell you, very delish, very good portions, the sesame/scallion soy dipping sauce tasted very genuine, it hit the spot with a cold Sapporo. I grew up weened on these dishes and everything I taste will be compared to my mothers brilliant cooking, and I have to admit, I can strongly recommend the flavors here in the three dishes I've tried. But next time I'll try the Bulgoki, and if it's not up to par??, I'll burn this pompous Kimchi stand to the ground. Mandu has a very small menu, which I think is a good thing here, and the waiters I've had are very young, laid back and very, very knowledgeable of the dishes. The place is small, it's fun/chic, and the prices are great for the District.

A War Memorial

I had alittle time today the weather was bright and warm, I wanted to spend some time and enjoy Washington D.C. without even thinking about where specifically to go. The west end of the National Mall was where I was drawn to. As I got onto Constitution Ave., an always coveted parking space opened up right away, I parked, got out and knew immediately I was in the neighborhood of the few of the most important war memorials in the country. If you've ever been here there is a familiar winding path that starts at Constitution Ave. and leads to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. A minute walk and I was descending down that familiar marble walk with the names of the fallen soldiers opening up in front of me, an on-going ocean of names.

And as anyone will tell you who have visited this site, each name seemed great, and important. Focusing in on any one of the names on that wall was moving. And as quick as lightning I realized today, in the unfortunate time when we inevitably construct future war memorials, there can only be one way for us to honor our soldiers killed in wartime. Display their names. I cannot speak for family and relatives who have suffered loss. But to me, sculptures and gardens, fountains and concrete structures moves me less than to read one name, and another name, of a soldier who lost their life fighting. If a soldier is killed in a war past this day, today, and we honor him in memorial, to know his name is to know his life.

This one is mine, with a pull of a wire chord, it's arms move from his side all the way to fully extended. I've seen children drawn to these, it's the simplicity of it, hand operated,..and who doesn't love playful monsters and creatures, and familiar characters in large projected shadow. They also sell a large cloth stage imprint for your own shadow puppet play. Owl. Robot. Mermaid.

Attman's Deli in Baltimore is one of the few still left standing in the heart of the city's "Corned Beef Row". A real New York Jewish Delicatessen right there in Baltimore, and it's been there for almost a century and it's still there, waiting for all of us to come by. So definitely make a trip up there if your into thick piles of pink, dripping, steaming, fatty, tender, corned beef on rye....."Corned Beef, Mustard, Rye, Period".... And with a GIANT, tart pickle..."You want it green or well done?....
Their hot dogs are classic, heaping with kraut, melted mozzarella, topped with jewish bologna. Liverwurst, tongue, matzo, lox, homemade knishes, it's all there, a dizzying array of glorious jewish fare with only the tenth of the tourists of Seventh Ave. Oh and "The Best Reuben In Baltimore". The place is cramped, it's loud, getting a table is like winning the lottery, But the corned beef is buttery, mouth-watering heaven.

yeah, Hump Off!...Eamonn's at King St. Alexandria, is the first Irish fish and chip house I've ever heard of in this area, so no brainer, it's all about the fish! The place is small, and it fills up fast, it opened at noon and in 5 min. it was filled up! I started my meal standing up. Huge cod fillet! Thick! Light beer batter coating, sea salt, great grub. Thick square cut strands of potato they call their chips,..tasty, semi-soggy, but who really cares that much about the chips. Wanted to try their famous prawns but it's a daily thing so was not on the menu this day. They have 7 signature sauces, tried 3, killer Tartar, recommend the Chesapeake & the Kitty O'Shea. .50 each. All chased with a pint of Guiness. Will be back for the prawns. Oh and they have a ton of Irish chips, chocolate and candy for sale,..all Irish junk food, it's pretty cool.

If you've had pizza at 2 Amy's, The Italian Store, or Pizzeria Paradiso, you gotta try Mia's right? I hauled my ass all the way out to Bethesda to try Melissa Ballingers pie. It was worth it, I had their Margherita, their classic staple, went straight to the heart. Soft, thin, light and airy crust, tomatoes straight from San Marzano Italy, and Buffalo mozzarella, cooked in a wood fire oven. You can see the oven from the street, the things blazing too. Ultra laid back atmosphere, has the feel of airy Santa Monica casual eatery, right there in the cozy art district of Bethesda. They got alot of pizza choices, great wine, and their Meatball Sliders are killer.

"HELLO,..EXACTLY!" Yes, saw The HAPPENING, or The Crappening, I like to call it..get it? And when I was in the middle of viewing this hideous disaster, I was thinkin to myself, what the hell is.........HAPPENING? to me,.... what the hell,.... is HAPPENING?,.... to me.. in this god-forsaken movie. What was HAPPENING was clinical depression, it was the most definitive act of a ten dollar bill wasted that I will ever experience. I was dying to know what was HAPPENING in the theatre next door.
I'm a huge fan of M Night Shamaloo, but this.. I have never seen a movie where every actor in it acted like they did not want to be there. And the charm of Zoey Deschanel...non-existent in this one. I dont even feel like getting into the whole premise of a movie where plants feel "oppressed" and then take it out on humans. Avoid this one, wait for the dvd, and when I say that, I mean wait until it comes out on DVD and then knock over the display.

I first heard of Action Park from a message board I go to that's based in NY and has alot of members from New Jersey. There was a thread on it that reminisced about this amusement park in Vernon Township New Jersey that the locals used to frequent because it was the most convenient place to have fun in the summer. The topic of the thread was completely about how this facility was a haven for employee negligence and poorly designed, unsafe rides. I thought it was a joke, until I checked it out.
The doctors at local hospitals named the park "Traction Park", "Accident Park", "Class Action Park". It eventually closed due to repeat violations and personal injury lawsuits. Cuts, scraps, bruises, broken bones, near drownings, were a daily occurance..hilarious or sad??

• In 1980, a 19-year-old park employee was killed on the alpine slide. His car jumped the track and his head struck a rock.
• In 1982, a 15-year-old boy drowned in the Wave Pool.
• A week later, a 27-year-old man from Long Island was electrocuted after falling out of his kayak on The Kayak Experience.
• In 1984, a man died of a heart attack supposedly caused by cold water in the pool beneath the Tarzan Swing (the drained Tarzan Swing pool is pictured above, courtesy of Abandoned But Not Forgotten.)
• Later that year, an 18-year-old from Brooklyn drowned in the Wave Pool.
• In 1987, another 18-year-old drowned in the Wave Pool.

Action Park shut its doors in 1996, and has since reopened as Mountain Creek Water park, with an increased emphasis on safety. So far, no deaths have been reported.

This is my cat Katie. She'll be 6 in August. The longest 6 years of my life. I got her at 5 weeks. She could barely see, she just got separated from one of 6 brothers, and if I wasn't gonna take her some 70 year old woman would of gotten her. If I could tell her.."one more screw up and it's straight to aunt Mamie!"... I would. My living situation keeps me from having a dog, and I wanted a companion, and I got one in spades. Katie is the coolest, but you can throw her into the "shy cat" category, but,.. as soon as a guest leaves, for her, it's celebrate Gray Cat Day, everyday.

A couple weird things, she hides from thunder, but will stand next to a loud vacuum cleaner. She begs for scraps but when offered, will literally trot away from it. She often sleeps belly up,.. 4 legs up. She loves baths. She'll only drink very cold water. She's cool, she looks good, she's smart, and there ain't a single thing you can put past her. And I love her to death.

Does anyone remember these? If you were born after 1970 you weren't old enough to experience these educational gems that were sent to you through the mail. Mid 70's were around the time they were showing up in the mailboxes of America. They were packs of 4x6 cards having to to with various topics, sports, animals gardening, food recipes, Olympic hopefuls(?)...They would arrive wrapped in cellophane in packets of 20 or so and with them was a order form used to obtain more packets in a series of these cards,...on the off chance you had completely taken leave of your senses.

The 70's was a funny time, the 60's was renewal, awareness, the 80's was self importance, the awakening of technology, at least we cared, granted it was plastic shirts with about 11 zippers on them but at least we cared alittle. The 70's, Americans stopped thinking all together I think. We suffered oppressive temperatures outdoors while wearing cool, breathable 3 piece polyester leisure suits, all the while letting heat escape through our heads by growing a pound of hair and wrapping it with sideburns the size of a small cat.

The information super highway was a dirt road. The time it would take for you to agree to receive more of these cards,...filling out the order form, putting your check inside, mailing them (I remember you had to use your own envelope), the company receiving your order, processing it, then sending them to you, would probably take at least a month to..whenever. What's hilarious is I remember my parents decided to not order any of these cards, and about 8 or 9 months later they sent us the rest of the complete set!,...like nobody wanted that crap and they were just dumping them! Today you can get the same information contained in a complete series of these cards in the time it takes to click a mouse a few times. Seconds compared to months.

Now, it's not fair to compare what was available to us back then to what is available to us today. It's not fair, but it is fun.

I first heard of Tackle Box in Georgetown D.C. from the local food section of our paper and it got some pretty good reviews, then I read it has a Lobster Roll on the menu and I immediately starting working out in my head a travel route and my secret parking spots near Wisconsin and M St.

Tackle Box opened two weeks ago and is a New England-style shore shack eatery conceptualized by PH Restaurant groups Chef Barton Seaver (who I met there with his chocolate lab puppy in hand) and New Orleans Executive Chef Robert Bechtold. They first opened the up-scale restaurant Hook on M street, and then Tackle Box right next door. The kitchen shares and borrows from each other throughout service. Although Tackle Box is a casual eatery, the menu has a upscale look and taste.

I got the crispy fried oysters ($9) to start, and they were great,..super light batter around plump, briny flavor. Then on to the Lobster Roll ($19). Comes with fries and they rival Elevation Burgers olive oil fries, perfectly cooked and crispy. The Lobster Roll at first appears small for the price but fills up nicely with an app and fries. Delicious, a light, horsey/mayo sauce, hardly any filler,..on a toasted potato roll. Bring the price down to $15 and we might be talking though. They make their own blueberry pie so I had a go, a very light buttery, flaky crust surrounds a disappointing filling, should of tried their homemade brownie.

The main thing to do at TB is for $13 bucks. You pick a fish, two sides and a sauce, that's what everybody is talking about and seems to be the very popular way to go. They also offer for carry-out, complete "Lobster Pots" as many as you need. A casual, airy, dining experience right on M street. Soon opening till 4am! Fri @ Sat.

I'm a big movie fan like everyone else, I have a movie collection that's pretty extensive, and love to collect them. I used to go to the movies as a kid by myself and watch the same film over and over again like I still do today. I appreciate the creators involved, the hard work, the massive effort it must take to bring a feature from concept to completion. I think it's the great connection that we have with the rest of the world, our ability to be the best in creating the most exciting, relevant films today.

But a third of my movie collection are documentaries. I'm a huge fan of the docs. For me it's the only real "reality" in the reality genre. The reality TV today is pretty much the most opposite of it. Some documentary films today are still very informative and do a pretty good job telling you the story it set out to tell you, but there still are alot of fancy edits, graphics and narrations. That's fine but if I can suggest to you a couple of my favorite films, documentary features that take a subject and chronologically record events over a long period of time, I think you will see the pure definition of documentation through film.

My first recommendation is Stevie.
Steve James, creator of the sprawling "Hoop Dreams", was a "big brother" to troubled kid Stevie Fielding when Fielding was a boy. Steve James sets out to see what actually happened to that boy he knew. Recording the events over a period of 4 years of his adulthood.

There is Country Boys from filmmaker David Sutherland. Filmed over 3 years, it records the stories of two boys through the ages of 15 to 18, trying to make it through in the Appalachian hills of Kentucky. And the entire 24 part series is available on line! here at pbs.org.

This type of material may not be for everyone, but if you got the time and the notion to see a story of real people that takes it's time telling itself, I think you may enjoy these two films.

Stirring in it's portrayal of feline angst. Is Peter hungry or contemplating his place in a hungry world? The artist has evoked both hopelessness and glee with his irrational use of negative space.

"Art Too Bad To Be Ignored" It's MOBA, Museum Of Bad Art. "Art Too Funny To Be Ignored" I say, It's the worst of the worst art found mostly in the garbage and garages. The guys at MOBA also provide brilliant commentary to go along with the canvased atrocities. They have also published a book called Masterworks, a hardcover containing the classics like "Mama and Babe", "Shy Glance" and "Think Again". See the entire collection at museumofbadart.org.
